Optimizing Your Gourmet Restaurant Experience

I love to eat and I love to go to high end restaurants, the ones that not only cook like I cannot but can even get ingredients I have no ready access. I love to cook as well and find it certainly makes me a better cook too. Eating at gourmet restaurants is expensive though, and very often extremely well worth it for many of us. Here are a few tips to optimize your experience.

First of all, you are not usually going to eat. You are going to have a dining experience. Food is included of course. In looking at costs, remember that few would spend thousands of dollars to stay at a local hotel and eat at local family and other low to medium budget places, although the accommodations and food might be excellent. You would however spend that money to go do it in Paris or Madrid or Tokyo, etc. You are paying for the experience, not the food.

If they have an online menu, you may want to check it out before you go. Certainly listen to any specials, and ask questions. I usually take the waitpersons advice.

I also like dining with friends who enjoy sharing their food. I like trying different dishes, although not everyone wants to share what's on their plate and that's OK too.

These days many places have plenty of reasonable priced wines, both by the glass and bottle. I'll look at the wine list online if at all possible. I'll also take the sommelier or waitpersons advice if unsure. In a great restaurant they should know! Of course, you don't need to drink wine. If the list is absurdly priced, and sometimes it is, I'll drink something else.

If anything is wrong, like the wine tastes like it's bad or anything else, speak up! Problems are problems unless they are fixed.

You also might try lunch instead of dinner. I've had fantastic long leisurely lunches at starred Michelin restaurants that I couldn't get dinner reservations for, and at a fraction of the price.
