Coconut Oil: Five Simple Uses

Coconut oil is a versatile oil, it can be used in baking, frying, drinks such as smoothies, on your hair, and on your skin. It is a great oil with many uses.

Coconut oil is a great oil for frying. Use it to make pancakes, use it for fried foods such as tempura. It is a great tasting oil to use with fried meats such as fried chicken. This tropical oil has the advantage of a high smoke point which means it can be heated to high temperatures and not do damage to your health. A high smoke point also means that your kitchen will stay much less smoky then it would with other oils, such as a light olive oil.

Cold Pressed Coconut Oil

You can use coconut oil to replace your shortening in baking. Breads such as zucchini bread, banana bread, and pumpkin bread, which requires shortening, are great with this oil. Replace equal amounts of shortening with this tropical oil.

If you enjoy cold drinks such as smoothies, add a bit of this oil and the drink will help you feel more full because of the added fats. With the unrefined version of the oil, you will get a great coconut flavor in your drink, a nice addition to a fruit smoothie.

Use coconut oil on your skin. Try this: Rub up a bit of the unrefined oil on the back of your hand. Check it in a few hours and feel how smooth your skin is. In the winter time when your skin is dry and scaly, rub coconut oil into your skin, allow it to set in your skin for a few minutes. When much of the oil has soaked in, use a damp cloth and wipe off the excess oil. You will find that coconut oil is an exceptional way to hydrate your skin in the winter time. In fact, it is very likely that you will not need lotion at all in the winter if you use this oil instead.

Apply coconut oil to your scalp. Scalps can get dry and itchy and, just like the skin on your arms and your legs, the skin on your head will benefit from the hydration brought by the oil. Rub the oil onto your scalp and allow it to sit for a half hour or so and think into your scalp. Plan to wash your hair as you normally would. You will find that your scalp is much less dry and, perhaps, much less its itchy as well.
